This cheekpiece is a combination of a hackamore and a bit. The hackamore combination is a cheekpiece with leverage and gives pressure on the nose, chin and in the mouth. The longer the shanks of the hackamore the stronger the effect. This combination with short shanks has a milder effect than the hackamore combi long. These bits are often used with very enthusiastic horses in the ring. Because of the leverage effect this is a quite sharp bit and therefore not suitable for the inexperienced rider. A waterford mouthpiece consists of a series of rounded links. It is a flexible bit that forms towards the horse's mouth and creates an even pressure. It can move in all directions making it difficult for the horse to lean on the bit so that the rider retains proper control. This bit is not suitable for inexperienced riders. In soft hands this mouthpiece is friendly but with a strong hand the bit can be sharp. The Sweet Iron bits are made of steel and have a recognizable blue color. Sweet Iron will rust when it comes into contact with (air) humidity, the surface rust tastes sweet and naturally stimulates the saliva production. This will cause the horse to salivate more, which in turn will encourage a better acceptance of the bit.
